Safe Routes to School

Ventura Park is part of the City of Portland’s Safe Routes to School program. The vision of this program is that all students and families can choose active transportation as a safe, convenient, accessible, and desirable option for getting to and from school and around their neighborhoods.

For more information, check out the city’s Safe Routes to School page as well as the Oregon Safe Routes to School page.

Don’t forget that HELMETS are required by law for children on bikes, skateboards and scooters. The Safety Store at Doernbecher Children’s hospital has helmets available for $10-12.

Now that it’s winter, don’t forget that you need lights in order to ride a bike safely after dark. The law requires a white light visible at least 500 feet to the front, and a red light or reflector visible at least 600 feet to the rear. Lights are available at many local stores that carry sporting goods, as well as at bike shops and online stores.
